How Negative Thinking can be Positive
As my subscribers, fellow bloggers and friends know only too well, I am all for positive thinking. I am often blogging on how to think, what to say and how to behave in a positive manner. But there is one negative exercise you can do which can have huge positive effects.
And I am going to ask you to partake of this once only thinking strategy. I want you to go far, far into the future right now.
I want you to play a mental video in your head, and if at all possible, see this video in black and white. Here’s what you can film.
I want you to imagine for a few moments you are on your deathbed. You’re old and you know with a surety the end is almost upon you. You are on your own contemplating a life of self-imposed missed opportunities, unrealised dreams; a life that was filled with what you now know were fears that had no foundations or truth in them whatsoever.
Is your life going to be one filled with If Only?
As you do this I want you to think that you have not achieved any of your dreams whatsoever. You are poor in monetary terms and poor in spirit. Really think about those unique qualities you possessed that you never used. Think of those talents you had that you denied sharing with your fellow human beings.
Try and think of all the ‘if only’s’ that you can think of. If only I had started that business. If only I had gone for that dream job; if only I had just got up and sang. If only I had written that book. If only I hadn’t cared what others might think about me. If only I had listened to my heart and tried to do what I was passionate about. If only I had left that boring, unfulfilling job.
If only I had (Fill in your own ending)
If only I had at least tried.
Feel the huge regret you would be feeling. Really imagine for a few moments how you would be feeling. See in your minds eye, the gloom on your face. Listen to the dialogue you are having with yourself.
Now, in your minds eye, stop the video and simply blow it up or destroy it however you see fit.
If you can muster up the courage to do this exercise it can be very powerful and positive. It can help you realise that there is nothing to be scared of in attempting to do what you really want to do.
It can help you beat that old thief of time, procrastination.
You were not created to to fail. There is something you can do that is really unique. Discover what it is and do it-or at the very least try and do it
Once you have annihilated the dark, miserable and morbid video you have just played, get out there and do whatever it takes to ensure that it doesn’t become a reality for you.
Win or lose doesn’t matter, you’ll never, ever regret giving your dreams a go.
